After watching the video, it was hard to narrow down just three characteristics that resonated with my own experiences.  This is probably because I am relatively “new” to teaching.  Here are the three I chose:

  1. Ask questions – identify the needs of the learner; gauge previously learned knowledge
  2. Observe learning – check the results of your teaching; critically evaluate what worked and what didn’t
  3. Reflect and act – be open to revise/redesign lectures, assessments and even whole courses or programs

Motivations for me to become engaged in SoTL activities include:

  • Better student outcomes and assessment scores
  • Renewed faculty excitement about teaching and greater self-awareness
  • Stronger overall faculty that values teaching and student learning
